Specifies file naming conventions if writing files to a newfolder. Select elements from the pop-up menus or enter text intothe fields to be combined into the default names for all files. The fields let you change the order and formatting of the componentsof the filename. You must include at least one field that is uniquefor every file (for example, filename, serial number, or serial letter)to prevent files from overwriting each other. Starting Serial Number specifiesthe starting number for any serial number fields. Serial letterfields always start with the letter "A" for the first file.
A To produce a combined sharpening result, we checked both thumbnails in the Advanced area. The white shapes in the thumbnails indicate the shape and direction of a blur that was caused by camera shake.
There are some conditions though. If the camera shake is severe, the shake reduction might not work. Camera shake reduction works best with well-lit images with low noise. Indoor or outdoor images with a long focal length are good, as well as indoor images of a still life with a slow shutter speed and no flash.
Shake Reduction is new in Photoshop CC, and it marks the first time we have a tool built specifically to reduce blurs caused by camera shake. Photography tricks we've used in the past included using the Motion Blur features in other filters (such as Smart Sharpen), but the results were often sub-par.
For real camera-shake situations, Shake Reduction can usually remove most of the blurring with a single pass. When necessary, you can even apply separate corrections (in a single Shake Reduction session) to different parts of the picture.
CS2 activation servers' shutdown: In January 2013, Adobe Photoshop CS2 (9.0), with some other CS2 products, was released with an official serial number, due to the technical glitch in Adobe's CS2 activation servers (see Creative Suite 1 and 2).
Photoshop CC (14.0) was launched on June 18, 2013. As the next major version after CS6, it is only available as part of a Creative Cloud subscription. Major features in this version include new Smart Sharpen, Intelligent Upsampling, and Camera Shake Reduction for reducing blur caused by camera shake. Editable Rounded Rectangles and an update to Adobe Camera Raw (8.0) were also included.
Image stabilizaation is an anti-shake mechanism inside your lens that helps reduce camera shake when you are hand-holding the camera. Canon and many others call it Image Stabilization, while Nikon calls it Vibration Reduction.
Over time many advanced features in recent versions of Photoshop (such as healing, hair selection, camera shake reduction, and panorama merge) have been handed down to Photoshop Elements, so some areas of Photoshop Elements are more powerful than older versions of Photoshop.
I was able to download copies of the Adobe CS2 Installers (with serial numbers) that Adobe accidentally released into the wild when the CS2 activation servers failed. I have copies of the installers on both a flash drive in my safety deposit box, and my desktop RAID 1.
(Note that in Premiere and After Effects, the stabilization works according to a hierarchy, and it will fall back to the previous process if one stabilization analysis fails to resolve the camera shake.)
Video. The Leica X Vario is one of the first Leica cameras to feature Full HD video recording, but it does so only at 30 frames per second. Results were iffy at best, with the X Vario's electronic stabilization failing to reduce much camera shake when panning. You can zoom while recording, but it's a dicey affair, as the manual zoom ring is a bit sticky and doesn't allow for smooth transitions. Take a look for yourself:
NOTE: These images are best quality JPEGs straight out of the camera, at default settings including noise reduction. Both interchangeable lens cameras in this comparison were shot with our very sharp reference lenses.
ISO 3200 starts to introduce more apparent noise in flatter areas, but this is likely due to the fact that the camera itself takes a lighter, more even-keeled approach to default noise reduction than many other models in this class from other companies, and the result is that fine detail is not lost in all the processing. If you don't mind a small amount of "film-grain-like" noise in some flatter areas then 11 x 14s will work just fine for you here. Taking the size to 8 x 10 all but eliminates the minor noise issue.
The Leica X Vario makes prints that are a joy to look at. At default settings, the camera takes a relatively light hand at sharpening and noise reduction, which makes its prints rather like a fine wine as compared to other cameras that take a more jarring, heavy-handed approach. Such over-processing is a bit like over-salted food; it gets old after awhile (or as ISO rises), and the X Vario stood out as a rare treat for us here at IR. Moreover, the X Vario's listed ISO sensitivities appear to be honest, unlike others whose results don't match up. In the end, the highest ISO (12,500) on the X Vario produces a good 5 x 7 with good color and little noise, while several recent APS-C cameras we reviewed could not produce usable 4 x 6s at two of their top published ISOs! Well done, Leica! 2b1af7f3a8
